Spilling from the end of the funnel

You are sending them to the bottom of the funnel when they just landed. That is a very steep well to fall down to.

A candy house at the rim of a dark stone well, with a tiny gold shop counter glowing at the bottom
The house first. Not the well.

I have clicked and looked and examined many links and websites of creators. All have one thing in common: they all assume you are already willing to invest time and money. And so they say “You” — because any person showing up on their link, their website, is “You.”

This is the same for brand websites and small businesses. It’s always: “Hi! Welcome to our site. Here’s 10% off! Now start shopping.” Sure, there is a boring About Us tab that nobody visits. Maybe a blog that is very promotional. And then some graphics on the homepage, and down to business.

Some creators will add a very small gallery. Most won’t. Many times the gallery will lead to a locked paywall. Or it will be behind an email sign-up.

So if you are thinking about it, you are sending them to the bottom of the funnel when they just landed. That’s a very steep well to fall down to.

The witch from Hansel and Gretel first tempted them with a house made of candy. If she just stood there at the door of a creepy-looking house and a prepared oven, they would have never entered or stayed.

A domain you own is not the same as a house people want to walk through. The house first. Not the oven.

Leave if you want. The hole will still be here when you come back.
